406 Day Avenue

Status:

Available/
Not yet renovated

In many ways, 406 Day is the “Grand Dame” of the block. With her first and second floors totaling 3460 square feet, she is certainly the largest of the Miller’s Hill homes. (Please realize square footage may change as the home is renovated.) And then there are her massive roof (which encloses a cavernous walk-up attic) and her second–story porch that help create a tall profile, emphasizing her size. She is one of the homes shown on a 1907 survey, so she is also one of the earliest homes on the block.

Happily, this lovely lady has retained much of her finery, including two superb fireplaces complete with original tiles; detailed trim on the double front door; pine floors; intricate trim and wainscoting on the staircase; unique door, window and baseboard trim throughout; and transom doors on the second floor. She reposes on a large lot measuring 50’ x 155’.

Those considering making 406 Day Avenue their home might be interested in knowing a few interesting snippets of her history:

  • George Davis was a prominent Roanoke photographer whose family owned 406 Day Avenue for almost 60 years. Toward the end of his life, Mr. Davis worked out of the home, converting one of the rooms into a darkroom.
  • To the delight of the local children, two elderly sisters who once lived in the home used to throw candy from the second story porch as the children walked home from school.
